About Madeira Botanical Garden
A terraced hillside garden east of the centre, opened in 1960, with choreographed geometric flowerbeds, island-endemic plants and succulents, and a sweeping view over Funchal's bay.
The Jardim Botânico da Madeira, the Madeira Botanical Garden, climbs a hillside east of central Funchal in the Bom Sucesso area, on land that once belonged to the family of the founder of Reid's Hotel. Opened in 1960 and founded by the engineer Rui Vieira, whose name it now carries, it covers about eight hectares and is divided into areas for the island's indigenous and endemic plants, an arboretum, succulents, agricultural and medicinal plants, and palms and cycads.
Its most photographed feature is the set of terraced ornamental beds laid out in bold geometric patterns of coloured foliage, the so-called choreographed gardens, looking out over Funchal and the bay. More than two thousand plants from every continent grow here, alongside around two hundred species native to Madeira, among them the blue-flowered Madeiran viper's bugloss and tree-like aloes. The grounds also hold a bird park and a small natural history museum, and a cable car links the garden with Monte.
Did you know? The garden opened in 1960 on a former estate of the family behind Reid's Hotel; it covers about eight hectares and is named after its founder, the engineer Rui Vieira.
