About San Lorenzo & Medici Market
The Medici family's parish church with Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy and Michelangelo's library, surrounded by the famous outdoor leather market.
San Lorenzo was the Medici family's parish church, one of the oldest in Florence, and the site of some of the most important early Renaissance architecture and decoration in the city. Brunelleschi designed the interior nave from 1421, creating a serene grey-and-white pietra serena arcade of supreme elegance; his Old Sacristy (Sagrestia Vecchia, 1421–1428) was the first great achievement of Renaissance interior design.
Donatello's last works, two bronze pulpits with New Testament scenes, stand in the nave. Michelangelo designed the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, the Medici library, accessible from the cloister, with its dramatic Mannerist vestibule staircase (1524–1534). The church is unfinished on the exterior, Michelangelo designed a marble façade that was never built. Outside the church, the Medici Market (Mercato di San Lorenzo) fills the surrounding streets and the piazza with stalls selling leather goods, scarves, and souvenirs.
Did you know? Michelangelo spent years designing a marble façade for San Lorenzo, quarried marble for it, and had roads cut through the mountains, then the commission was cancelled by the Medici Pope, leaving the church in bare brick to this day.
