About San Miniato al Monte

Tuscany's finest Romanesque church, dating from 1018, with a gleaming marble façade, golden Byzantine mosaics, and sweeping panoramic views over Florence from its hilltop position.

San Miniato al Monte stands on a hilltop south of the Arno, reached by climbing the broad staircase from Piazzale Michelangelo. The church is built over the site where San Miniato, an Armenian merchant and early Christian martyr decapitated during the persecution of Emperor Decius around 250 AD, is said to have carried his own severed head up the hill and laid it down at the spot where he wished to be buried.

The current Romanesque building was begun in 1018. The façade of white Carrara and green Prato marble in geometric patterns is one of the most beautiful in Italy. Inside, the floor is paved with intarsia marble panels depicting signs of the zodiac and the Christian calendar, laid in 1207. The apse mosaic of Christ enthroned between the Virgin and San Miniato dates from 1260. Benedictine monks still live here and sing Gregorian chant at Vespers each afternoon, an experience of remarkable medieval timelessness.

Did you know? Benedictine monks have lived at San Miniato continuously since 1373 and still sing Gregorian chant at Vespers every afternoon, one of the most authentic medieval experiences available in Florence, and entirely free.
