About Bargello Museum

Florence's sculpture museum par excellence, in the city's oldest public building, housing Donatello's bronze David, the first free-standing nude since antiquity, and early works by Michelangelo and Cellini.

The Bargello is Florence's sculpture museum and one of the great collections in the world. The building itself, a forbidding stone fortress begun in 1255, was the city's first public palace, serving successively as seat of the chief magistrate (the podestà), the police headquarters (bargello), and from 1574 a prison. The courtyard wall bears the arms of podestàs who governed Florence over the centuries. Today it houses the national sculpture museum.

The ground floor and upper floors contain a sequence of extraordinary rooms. Donatello's bronze David (c.1440–1460), the first free-standing male nude in Western sculpture since antiquity, stands at the centre of the main hall, a revolutionary work of startling sensuality. Donatello's St George (original, 1415), his Marzocco lion, and his Mary Magdalene are also here. On the upper floor: Michelangelo's Bacchus (his first major work in Rome, 1496–1497), his Brutus, his Tondo Pitti, and Cellini's magnificent bronze Bust of Cosimo I. The competition panels for the Baptistery north doors by Ghiberti and Brunelleschi can be compared here side by side.

Did you know? The Bargello served as a prison from 1574 to 1859; public executions took place in its courtyard, where the coats of arms of 700 years of Florentine magistrates are still carved into the walls.
