About Oltrarno District
Florence's authentic 'other bank' neighbourhood, where goldsmiths, frame-makers, antique restorers, and artisans work in workshops unchanged for generations, alongside the city's best trattorias and wine bars.
Oltrarno, 'beyond the Arno', is the name for the neighbourhood on the south bank of the river, traditionally regarded as the working-class and artisan counterpart to the grander north bank. Today it is considered the most authentically Florentine part of the city: less touristic, more residential, with a persistent tradition of artisan crafts, goldsmiths, leather workers, furniture restorers, picture framers, bookbinders, working in ground-floor workshops that have changed little in generations.
The Oltrarno comprises several distinct sub-neighbourhoods: the elegant streets around Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens; the lively and bohemian Piazza di Santo Spirito with its market and bars; and the quieter, more residential San Frediano and San Niccolò quarters. The area is also home to the Brancacci Chapel, the Pitti Palace, Santo Spirito church, and the best concentration of traditional Florentine trattorias in the city.
Did you know? The Oltrarno contains the highest concentration of traditional craft workshops remaining in any major Italian city, picture framers, furniture restorers, goldsmiths, and leather workers who have operated in the same street for generations.
