About Museo di San Marco

A Dominican convent where Fra Angelico painted a fresco in every monk's cell, including the breathtaking Annunciation at the top of the stairs, one of the great devotional paintings of the Renaissance.

The Museo di San Marco occupies the Dominican convent of San Marco, renovated by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo de' Medici between 1437 and 1444. The convent is inseparable from the name of Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro, c.1395–1455), a Dominican friar and painter of extraordinary spiritual intensity who decorated virtually every space in the complex.

At the top of the dormitory stairs, the Annunciation fresco greets every monk as he emerged from his cell, a painting of such luminous simplicity that it has never been surpassed as an image of sacred encounter. Each of the forty-four cells has its own fresco by Fra Angelico or his workshop, creating an unparalleled ensemble of meditative devotional art. The convent also contains the cell of Fra Girolamo Savonarola, preserved as a historical site, and a remarkable collection of Fra Angelico's panel paintings gathered from churches across Florence.

Did you know? Fra Angelico was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and declared patron of Catholic artists in 1984, he is often called "Beato Angelico" (the Blessed Angelico) in Italian.
