About Temple of Hadrian

A small, elaborately carved monument on Curetes Street, famous for the shallow arch over its porch, dedicated to the emperor Hadrian and funded by a local citizen.

The Temple of Hadrian is a small, richly decorated monument on the north side of Curetes Street, built in honour of the emperor Hadrian in the first half of the second century AD. An inscription records that it was funded by a citizen named Publius Quintilius. Its facade carries four Corinthian columns, and over the central pair springs a shallow arch, the feature that makes it instantly recognisable, with a relief bust of Tyche on the keystone.

Over the inner doorway, a lunette holds a relief of a female figure amid acanthus scrollwork, commonly identified as a Medusa placed to ward off evil. The porch carries four frieze panels depicting the legendary foundation of Ephesus, but these are casts; the original fourth-century slabs are displayed in the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk. Four pedestals in front once bore statues of the Tetrarch emperors, and scholars debate whether the building was a true temple or an imperial-cult monument.

Did you know? The porch's carved panels of Ephesus's founding myths are modern casts. The original fourth-century AD slabs, showing the hero Androclus, Amazons and gods, are kept in the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk.
