About Curetes Street
The grand marble processional avenue of Ephesus, lined with columns, shops, fountains and monuments, running downhill from the Hercules Gate to the square before the Library of Celsus.
Curetes Street is one of the three principal avenues of Ephesus, running down the valley between Mount Pion and Mount Coressus from the Gate of Heracles in the upper city to the square before the Library of Celsus. It is named after the Curetes, a college of Ephesian priests whose title derived from mythological demigods linked to the birth of Artemis. The street served both as a processional route and as the city's main commercial artery, lined with colonnaded porticoes, shops, fountains, honorific statues and major monuments.
The roadway was paved with marble slabs, while the covered sidewalks in front of the shops were floored with mosaics, and water pipes and a drainage channel ran beneath. The columns lining the avenue are mismatched because the street was rebuilt after late-antique earthquakes using spolia, reused columns and blocks. Many statues that once stood here are now missing or shown as casts, with surviving originals held in the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk.
Did you know? The columns along Curetes Street deliberately do not match. After earthquakes damaged the avenue in late antiquity, it was rebuilt with spolia, older shafts and blocks salvaged from other ruined buildings around the city.
