About Selcuk Aqueduct (Byzantine Aqueduct)
A line of Roman-and-Byzantine aqueduct arches marching through Selcuk town, built partly from recycled ancient marble and famous for the white storks that nest on top each spring.
A line of tall arched piers crosses the centre of Selcuk town, running roughly parallel to Inonu Caddesi near the railway station. The structure is generally described as Roman in origin and restored or rebuilt in the Byzantine period, carrying water across the settlement below the Ayasuluk hill. Its piers are partly built from reused ancient marble blocks, or spolia, some brought from Ephesus and the Temple of Artemis and set into the feet of the arches.
Today the arches are a social focus of the town, lined by cafes and restaurants beneath the piers. The aqueduct is best known for its white storks, which build large stick nests on top of the arches. The birds are migratory and return to Selcuk each year around mid-March to breed, reoccupying the nests, and they are widely regarded as the reason the aqueduct is the town's best-loved landmark.
Did you know? White storks nest on top of the aqueduct's arches; they are migratory, returning to Selcuk each year around mid-March to breed, and they make the ruin the town's best-loved landmark.
