About House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi)
A small stone house on Bülbül Mountain that Christian tradition honours as the last home of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage place shared by Christians and Muslims.
The House of the Virgin Mary, known in Turkish as Meryem Ana Evi, is a small stone house on Bülbül Mountain, also called Mount Koressos, about seven kilometres from ancient Ephesus. Christian tradition holds that the Virgin Mary was brought here by St John and spent the last years of her earthly life in the house. The connection rests on the visions of the German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich, published after her death, rather than on documented history.
The French priest Abbé Julien Gouyet located the site in 1881, and two Lazarist missionaries confirmed it in 1891. Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey helped buy and restore it and cared for it until her death in 1915. The Roman Catholic Church has never officially ruled on the site's authenticity but supports the pilgrimage; three popes have visited. The house is venerated by Muslims as well as Christians, and a nearby wall is covered with pilgrims' notes.
Did you know? The identification of the house with the Virgin Mary rests on the visions of the German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich, not on historical records, so the Church has never formally judged its authenticity.
