About Cave of the Seven Sleepers
A legend, not history: seven youths who supposedly slept for centuries. The site is really a Byzantine hillside necropolis of hundreds of tombs, honoured by Christians and Muslims.
The Cave of the Seven Sleepers lies on the eastern slope of Mount Pion, just east of ancient Ephesus. According to legend, seven young Christian men persecuted under the emperor Decius, around 250 AD, hid in a cave, fell asleep, and awoke roughly two centuries later under Theodosius II. An Islamic version, the Companions of the Cave, appears in the Qur'an's Surah al-Kahf. The story is a religious legend rather than documented history.
The physical remains are a Byzantine church-and-necropolis complex: a hillside honeycombed with hundreds of vaulted and rock-cut tombs alongside a church, mostly used in the fifth and sixth centuries. The site was excavated between 1926 and 1928 by the Austrian Archaeological Institute, which recorded graves and inscriptions invoking the Seven Sleepers. The legend's prestige turned the slope into a large pilgrimage cemetery, so the 'cave' is really a cluster of many tombs rather than a single grotto.
Did you know? The same story appears in Islam as the Companions of the Cave in the Qur'an's Surah al-Kahf, 'the Cave', which does not state their number; tradition counts seven plus a dog, Qitmir.
