About Cefalù Cathedral
A magnificent Norman cathedral founded by Roger II in 1131, featuring the finest Christ Pantocrator mosaic in Sicily, twin towers framing a golden apse, and a dramatic setting between La Rocca cliff and the sea.
Cefalù Cathedral is one of the supreme achievements of Norman architecture in Sicily, a massive, austere Romanesque structure built on the orders of King Roger II of Sicily as thanksgiving for surviving a storm at sea in 1131. The cathedral stands at the foot of the great La Rocca cliff, its twin square towers dominating the small town and visible for miles out to sea. The interior is modest in scale but contains one of the greatest works of medieval art in the world: the Christ Pantocrator mosaic in the apse, dated to the 1140s, in which a colossal image of Christ as Lord of All gazes down from a golden ground with an intensity and psychological presence unmatched anywhere in Western medieval art. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Arab-Norman Palermo inscription of 2015).
Did you know? The Christ Pantocrator mosaic at Cefalù is inscribed in both Greek and Latin, 'I am the Light of the World', reflecting Norman Sicily's unique multicultural identity, where Byzantine Greek, Arab, Latin, and Jewish cultures all coexisted under the Norman kings.
