Day 1
Morning
- Cefalù Cathedral: A magnificent Norman cathedral founded by Roger II in 1131, featuring the finest Christ Pantocrator mosaic in Sicily, twin towers framing a golden apse, and a dramatic setting between La Rocca cliff and the sea.
- Christ Pantocrator Mosaic: Widely considered the finest medieval depiction of Christ in existence, a colossal Byzantine mosaic on a gold ground in the apse of Cefalù Cathedral, dating to the 1140s, whose gaze of absolute authority has moved visitors for nearly nine centuries.
- Cefalù Beach: The longest sandy beach on the northern coast of Sicily, stretching in a wide arc west of the medieval town, with La Rocca cliff as a dramatic backdrop and clear Tyrrhenian Sea waters, one of the most beautiful town beaches in the Mediterranean.
Afternoon
- La Rocca: The great 270-metre limestone crag that towers over Cefalù, crowned with Norman fortifications and an ancient Temple of Diana, a steep but rewarding hike with panoramic views of the coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
- Mandralisca Museum: A small but extraordinary museum housing Antonello da Messina's enigmatic 'Portrait of an Unknown Sailor', one of the greatest Renaissance portraits in Italy, whose subject's half-smile has been compared to the Mona Lisa.
- Corso Ruggero: The ancient main street of Cefalù, named for Roger II, following the line of the original Greek-Roman cardo through the medieval town, alive with shops, cafés, and the evening passeggiata, ending at the Porta di Terra arch.
Day 2
Morning
- The Old Washhouse: Lavatoio Medievale: A perfectly preserved 16th-century public wash-house fed by a natural spring, where women did their laundry for centuries, a unique and atmospheric monument tucked beneath street level at the foot of La Rocca.
- Cefalù Fishing Port: The small traditional fishing harbour on the eastern side of Cefalù, where brightly painted wooden boats still come in with the morning catch, a living remnant of the town's centuries-old fishing culture.
- Temple of Diana on La Rocca: A mysterious megalithic sanctuary at the summit of La Rocca, built with Cyclopean stone walls long before the Greeks arrived in Sicily, its origins and original function remain subjects of scholarly debate, adding to its atmosphere of ancient mystery.
Afternoon
- Castelbuono: A perfectly preserved medieval hill town inland from Cefalù, dominated by the Ventimiglia Castle with its extraordinary Palatine Chapel decorated in stucco by Giuseppe Serpotta, and famous for its manna and the wild mushroom festival.
- Sicilian Food of Cefalù: A vibrant food culture shaped by centuries of Arab, Norman, and Mediterranean influences, from the iconic pasta con le sarde to brioche con granita for breakfast and the finest arancini in northern Sicily.
- Cinema Paradiso Connection: The Oscar-winning film 'Cinema Paradiso' (1988) by Giuseppe Tornatore used Cefalù and the nearby town of Palazzo Adriano as its locations, transforming this corner of Sicily into a pilgrimage site for lovers of world cinema.
