About Cefalù Fishing Port

The small traditional fishing harbour on the eastern side of Cefalù, where brightly painted wooden boats still come in with the morning catch, a living remnant of the town's centuries-old fishing culture.

The fishing port of Cefalù occupies a small natural harbour on the eastern side of the town, tucked in under the bulk of La Rocca cliff. The port has been a fishing harbour since ancient times, and while it is now also used by pleasure boats, working fishing vessels, small wooden boats painted in bright traditional colours, still leave in the evening and return in the morning. The early morning fish market on the quayside is a lively and authentic Sicilian experience: fishermen selling directly from their boats, the catch spread on ice including swordfish, tuna, sea bream, and the particularly prized red prawns of the Tyrrhenian coast. Several restaurants near the port serve the morning's catch at lunch.

Did you know? The red prawns (gamberi rossi) caught in the deep waters off the Cefalù coast are considered some of the finest in the Mediterranean, they are caught at depths of 400-700 metres and have a distinctly sweet, rich flavour. In Sicily they are often served raw, dressed only with olive oil and sea salt.
