The lavatorio (lavatoio) of Cefalù is one of the most charming and unusual monuments in Sicily: a public wash-house in its present form rebuilt in the 16th century and fed by a natural spring, preserved almost entirely intact and still full of water. Reached by descending a series of stone steps from street level, the wash-house consists of a series of stone basins fed by water flowing from lion-head spouts, the water emerges from the base of La Rocca through these spouts and flows through the basins. For centuries, this was where the women of Cefalù did their communal laundry. The monument preserves an extraordinary social and daily-life dimension of old Sicily that most historic sites do not.
