About Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum
A vast open-air museum on the shore of Lake Herăstrău, where real peasant houses, wooden churches and windmills brought from across Romania are rebuilt into a whole country village under the city's trees.
The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum is a large open-air museum on the shore of Lake Herăstrău, opened in 1936. It was created by the sociologist Dimitrie Gusti, who had sent student research teams into villages across Romania; for the museum, whole peasant houses, wooden churches, windmills and farmsteads were taken apart in their home villages, shipped to Bucharest by rail, and rebuilt by village craftsmen on the lakeshore.
One of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe, it gathers buildings from every Romanian region, from the 17th to the 20th century: log houses and plastered cottages, carved wooden gates, water mills, and the slender spired wooden churches of Maramureș. It has twice suffered serious fires and been rebuilt each time with the same old techniques. Walking its lanes is like travelling the whole Romanian countryside in an afternoon.
