About Arcul de Triumf

Bucharest's own triumphal arch on the Kiseleff road, the present stone arch of 1936 honouring Romania's role in the First World War and its 1918 union, with a terrace and a National Day parade beneath it.

The Arcul de Triumf, Bucharest's triumphal arch, stands on the tree-lined Kiseleff road in the north of the city. It commemorates Romania's part in the First World War and the union of 1918. Earlier arches of wood and plaster stood here for victories and royal entries; the present permanent arch, of stone, was designed by the architect Petre Antonescu and inaugurated on 1 December 1936. About 27 metres tall, it is modelled in spirit on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, with carved reliefs and inscriptions and a staircase within to a viewing terrace.

Under communism the monument was stripped of its royal texts and portraits; these were restored in a renovation completed in 2016. On 1 December, Romania's National Day, a military parade passes beneath the arch, which looks down the long Kiseleff axis and belongs to the 'Little Paris' identity of the interwar city.

Did you know? The present stone arch, about 27 metres tall, was designed by Petre Antonescu and inaugurated on 1 December 1936, replacing earlier temporary arches of wood and plaster.
