About Old Princely Court (Curtea Veche)

The brick ruins of the medieval court of the Wallachian princes, where Vlad the Impaler is first recorded ruling from Bucharest in 1459, beside the Old Court Church, the oldest church in the city.

Curtea Veche, the Old Princely Court, is what remains of the medieval residence of the princes of Wallachia, in the Old Town. It is tied to Vlad III the Impaler, the ruler behind the Dracula legend, who in 1459 issued the document that gives Bucharest its first written mention, naming the fortress here as his princely seat. Later princes rebuilt the court in stone, until it was broken up and sold off at the end of the eighteenth century, its stones taken for merchants' houses.

Today a sunken archaeological area shows brick arches, vaulted cellars and column bases, watched over by a bronze bust of Vlad. Beside it stands the Old Court Church, the Biserica Curtea Veche, of the mid-sixteenth century, the oldest church in Bucharest, with a striped brick-and-stone facade revealed by twentieth-century restorers and a carved, gilded screen within.

Did you know? In 1459 Vlad III the Impaler issued the document that gives Bucharest its first written mention, naming the fortress here as his princely residence; he is linked to the court, though the Dracula vampire is Bram Stoker's fiction.
