The National Museum of Art of Romania occupies the former Royal Palace on Calea Victoriei, facing Revolution Square. It has held the national art collections since 1950; before that, the palace was the residence of Romania's kings, until King Michael I was forced to abdicate in 1947. The present building dates from 1936 and 1937, after an earlier palace burned in 1926.
The museum holds the National Gallery of Romanian art, with sculptures by Constantin Brâncuși and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu, and a European gallery built on the royal collection, with works by El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens and the Impressionists. The palace itself was damaged and partly burned during the December 1989 Revolution and carefully restored; its grand state rooms, including the Throne Hall and the Voivodes' Staircase, survive.
