About Romanian Athenaeum

The city's beloved domed concert hall of 1888, raised partly by public subscription, home of the George Enescu Philharmonic and Festival, with a sweeping fresco of Romanian history around its auditorium.

The Romanian Athenaeum, the Ateneul Român, is the circular, domed concert hall at the heart of Bucharest, opened in 1888 and still the city's most prestigious stage. Designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, its Neoclassical front rises on six Ionic columns beneath a great dome some 41 metres high. Part of the cost was gathered from the public with the famous appeal 'Give one leu for the Athenaeum'.

It is the home of the George Enescu Philharmonic and of the George Enescu Festival, the biggest classical-music festival in Romania, first held in 1958. Around the curved wall of the auditorium runs a vast fresco by Costin Petrescu, 75 metres long, depicting the history of Romania from Roman times to the union of 1918. In front stands a statue of the national poet Mihai Eminescu.

Did you know? Opened in 1888 and designed by the French architect Albert Galleron, the Athenaeum was funded partly through the public appeal 'Give one leu for the Athenaeum'.
