About Palace of the Parliament
The colossal palace Nicolae Ceaușescu built on the ruins of a flattened quarter, one of the largest and heaviest buildings on Earth, now the seat of Romania's Parliament and a contemporary-art museum.
The Palace of the Parliament, the Palatul Parlamentului, is the vast building that dominates the west end of the broad Union Boulevard. Begun in 1984 as the House of the Republic and known since 1989 as the People's House, it is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world and is often called the heaviest. It is about 84 metres high with eight underground levels, holds roughly 1,100 rooms, and sinks a few millimetres into the ground each year under its own weight. Its chief architect, Anca Petrescu, was only 28 when she was chosen.
It was the centrepiece of Nicolae Ceaușescu's 'systematisation', for which a whole district of old Bucharest, churches, monasteries, hospitals and homes, was demolished and some forty thousand people were relocated; the cleared ground was bitterly nicknamed 'Ceaușima'. Built almost entirely from Romanian marble, wood and crystal, it was still unfinished when Ceaușescu fell in 1989. Today it houses the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art; much of it stands empty, and guided tours take visitors through a fraction of its marble halls.
