About King Michael I Park (Herăstrău)

King Michael I Park, long known as Herăstrău, is the largest park in central Bucharest, spread around the broad Lake Herăstrău in the north of the city. It was laid out in the 1930s on former marshland of the Colentina river, drained to create a chain of lakes, and opened to the public in 1939. Renamed in 2017 after King Michael I, who died that year, it was earlier the National Park, then Carol II Park, then, under communism, Stalin Park.

A path of almost six kilometres runs right around the lake, now walkable the whole way. The park holds lakeside restaurants and boat trips, a Japanese garden, an alley of Japanese cherry trees, a rose garden, and statues and busts of figures such as Shakespeare, Hugo and Chopin, along with a monument to the founders of the European Union. The Village Museum and Elisabeta Palace lie within its grounds.
