Château Mouton Rothschild occupies a unique position in Bordeaux wine history as the only estate to have moved up in the 1855 classification: classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973 following a decades-long campaign by the Rothschild family. The famous slogan attributed to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, "Premier je suis, Second je fus, Mouton ne change" (First I am, Second I was, Mouton does not change), captures both his ambition and his pride. Since 1945, the label of each vintage of Château Mouton Rothschild has been designed by a different celebrated artist: among those who have contributed labels are Pablo Picasso (1973), Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol (1975), Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Jeff Koons. The estate also contains one of the finest wine museums in the world.
