About Château Margaux
A Premier Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc with a Greek-temple facade, producing one of the world's most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines from 260 hectares of ancient gravelly terroir.
Château Margaux is one of only five first growths in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Classification and occupies a unique position among them: its neoclassical château, built in 1810 in the style of a Greek Doric temple, is the most architecturally distinguished building in the Médoc, and its wine is often cited as the most elegant and perfumed of the five first growths. The estate covers 260 hectares of which 82 are planted with vines, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon on deep gravelly soil. The château produces both its grand vin (Château Margaux) and a second wine (Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux). The estate also produces a white wine, Pavillon Blanc, from Sauvignon Blanc, one of the best dry white wines in Bordeaux. Château Margaux was classified as a premier grand cru classé in the 1855 classification and has maintained that status without interruption for 170 years.
