Château Pichon Longueville Baron (to distinguish it from its neighbour Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, with which it shares a common history) is one of the most spectacular properties in the Médoc, its neo-Gothic château with twin towers, built in 1851, is reflected in a moat and set against the backdrop of the Pauillac vineyards in a composition that is among the most photographed scenes in Bordeaux. The estate was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, but its wines, particularly since the late 1980s when the estate was purchased by the insurance company AXA Millésimes, have consistently been considered equal to or better than many first growths. The wine is known for its power, concentration, and the distinctive Pauillac character of cedar, blackcurrant, and graphite.
