The Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is one of the most extraordinary architectural complexes in Barcelona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built between 1901 and 1930 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner as the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Rather than the conventional hospital model of a single large building, Domènech i Montaner designed a garden city of 48 ornate Art Nouveau pavilions connected by underground tunnels, all oriented diagonally to the Eixample grid so that each building receives maximum sunlight. Every facade is covered in ceramic mosaics, sculptural groups, stained glass, and ironwork of extraordinary richness. The hospital continued in use until 2009 and has since been converted into one of the most spectacular cultural centres in Barcelona.
