About Bunkers del Carmel
The finest 360-degree panoramic viewpoint in Barcelona, a hilltop with Civil War anti-aircraft battery ruins offering the most complete view of the entire city, the sea, the mountains, and the Sagrada Família, particularly stunning at sunset.
The Turó de la Rovira, known to everyone as the Bunkers del Carmel because of the Civil War-era anti-aircraft battery ruins on its summit, is the finest viewpoint in Barcelona, offering a complete 360-degree panorama of the entire city, the Mediterranean, and the surrounding mountains. At 262 metres above sea level, it stands well above the surrounding neighbourhoods of Gràcia and el Carmel, and from its summit you can see everything: the Sagrada Família, the towers of Camp Nou, the mountains of Collserola behind the city, the Montjuïc hill to the south, the entire urban fabric of the Eixample laid out in its perfect grid, and the blue arc of the Mediterranean on the horizon. The ruins on the summit are the remnants of the anti-aircraft battery placed here during the Spanish Civil War to defend Barcelona against Nationalist bombing raids. After the war, the area became an illegal shantytown housing the poor migrants who flooded into the city in the 1950s and 60s; the houses were demolished in the 1990s, leaving the ruins and the extraordinary panorama. Today it is one of the city's favourite spots for sunset-watching, arrive an hour before sunset for the best views.
Did you know? The Bunkers del Carmel are the ruins of an anti-aircraft battery placed here in 1938 to defend Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, the same hilltop was later occupied by an illegal shantytown for 50 years before being cleared in the 1990s.
