About Montserrat

Catalonia's sacred mountain, a spectacular massif of serrated rock columns 50 km from Barcelona, crowned by a Benedictine monastery and the revered Black Madonna, reachable by rack railway and cable car.

Montserrat is the most sacred place in Catalonia, a dramatic mountain of serrated rock columns rising to 1,236 metres about 50 kilometres from Barcelona, whose Benedictine monastery is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Spain. The mountain takes its name from the Catalan 'serrated mountain', an accurate description of the extraordinary vertical rock columns that give it its unmistakable silhouette. The monastery contains the revered Romanesque statue of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta), which has been venerated as the patron saint of Catalonia since the 12th century. The mountain also offers spectacular walking trails, from short paths to the monastery's hermitages to full-day hikes to the summit and back.

Did you know? The Escolania de Montserrat, the boys' choir of the monastery, was founded in the 13th century and is one of the oldest continuously operating choirs in the world, you can hear them sing every day at 1pm.
