About Les Quatre Columnes & Magic Fountain

An iconic open-air space at the foot of Montjuïc, the reconstructed Four Columns (symbolic of the four stripes of the Catalan flag) face the grand staircase leading to MNAC, flanked by the spectacular Magic Fountain of Montjuïc that performs dazzling light-and-water shows on weekend evenings.

The Plaza de España area at the foot of Montjuïc is one of Barcelona's most theatrical spaces, a grand ensemble of monuments, fountains, and ceremonial avenues designed for the 1929 Universal Exposition. The central attraction on summer and autumn evenings is the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, designed by the engineer Carles Buïgas for the Exposition, which performs elaborate choreographed water-and-light shows to music. In front of the MNAC staircase stand the reconstructed Quatre Columnes, four tall Ionic columns that were originally erected in 1919 as a symbol of Catalan nationhood, demolished under Primo de Rivera's dictatorship in 1928, and rebuilt in 2010.

Did you know? The Magic Fountain was built by engineer Carles Buïgas using 3,000 workers in just under 14 months, he is said to have worked so obsessively that he barely slept for the duration of the project. When the fountain was unveiled at the 1929 Exposition, it reportedly moved some spectators to tears.
