About El Born Cultural Centre

A stunning 19th-century iron market building now housing a remarkable archaeological site of Barcelona's old city destroyed in 1714, the El Born Cultural Centre preserves the ruins of an entire neighbourhood of medieval streets and buildings beneath a spectacular glass roof.

El Born Cultural Centre occupies one of the most spectacular 19th-century iron market buildings in Spain, the Mercat del Born, built in 1876, whose vast interior of cast iron and glass now shelters something entirely unexpected: the ruins of an entire Barcelona neighbourhood destroyed by the Bourbon forces who besieged the city in 1714 during the War of Spanish Succession. The ruined streets, houses, wells, and workshops were discovered in 2002 during renovation works and are now open to visitors, who walk across glass floors and bridges above the excavations. The site has enormous historical significance: 1714 was the year Barcelona lost its autonomy and the Catalan language was suppressed.

Did you know? The 1714 ruins were discovered entirely by accident in 2001, when the Mercat del Born was being renovated to become a library. The discovery was so significant that the plan was abandoned and the ruins were preserved instead, making El Born one of the few cases where an archaeological discovery literally changed the intended purpose of a building.
