About Casa Batlló
Gaudí's fantastical dragon-house on the Passeig de Gràcia, a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece with a shimmering iridescent facade, bone-like columns, and a roof that curves like the scales of a reptile.
Casa Batlló is one of Gaudí's most spectacular and widely interpreted works, a remodelling of a conventional 19th-century apartment building on the Passeig de Gràcia, carried out between 1904 and 1906, that transformed it into one of the most extraordinary buildings ever constructed. The building is commonly known as the 'house of bones' or the 'dragon house': the facade is covered in a shimmering mosaic of iridescent blue and green ceramic tiles, the columns look like vertebrae, the balconies like skulls and bones, and the steeply curved roof scales upward like the back of a dragon. The interior is equally extraordinary, flowing organic forms, blue-tiled light wells, and spaces that feel unlike any conventional architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
Did you know? Casa Batlló is commonly known as the 'house of bones' because the columns look like vertebrae and the balconies look like skulls, Gaudí was reportedly inspired by the legend of Saint George and the dragon.
