About Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic)

The ancient heart of Barcelona, a medieval labyrinth of narrow alleys, Roman ruins, Gothic churches, and hidden squares built on top of the original Roman city of Barcino.

The Barri Gòtic is the oldest part of Barcelona, a dense medieval neighbourhood built on top of and incorporating the remains of the ancient Roman city of Barcino, founded in the 1st century BCE. The Roman walls, sections of which are still visible, enclosed a settlement of perhaps 15,000 people. The medieval city that grew over the Roman ruins in the 13th-15th centuries produced some of the finest Gothic architecture in Spain: the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Church of Santa Maria del Pi, the Plaça Reial with its palm trees and arcades, and the Pont del Bisbe bridge. Walking through the Gothic Quarter's network of narrow streets, with stone building above, is one of the most evocative experiences in Barcelona.

Did you know? The Gothic Quarter is built on top of the Roman city of Barcino, founded around 15 BCE, you can walk through preserved sections of the Roman city in the underground MUHBA archaeological museum.
