About Park Güell
Gaudí's spectacular hillside park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the famous mosaic terrace, dragon staircase, and enchanting gingerbread gatehouses that offer panoramic views over Barcelona.
Park Güell is one of the most magical spaces in all of Barcelona, a hillside public park in the Gràcia district designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1914 as a private residential development for the industrialist Eusebi Güell. When the development failed commercially, Güell donated the land to the city of Barcelona, which opened it as a public park in 1926. The park combines Gaudí's characteristic naturalistic architecture, sinuous stone viaducts, colonnaded walkways, and grottoes that look like they grew from the hillside, with the spectacular mosaic terrace, covered with Gaudí's iconic trencadís (broken tile mosaic) work, that offers some of the finest views of Barcelona. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
Did you know? Park Güell was originally designed as a private residential garden city, only two of the planned 60 houses were ever built, making it a commercial failure that became one of the world's greatest public parks.
