About Montjuïc
Barcelona's great hill overlooking the city and port, home to a castle, the 1992 Olympic Stadium, the Fundació Joan Miró, the Jardins de Laribal, and the Font Màgica fountain, reachable by cable car.
Montjuïc is the great hill that rises 173 metres above the southern edge of Barcelona, overlooking the city, the port, and the Mediterranean. The hill has been a strategic military fortification since the 17th century, when the Castle of Montjuïc was built, a fortress that witnessed many of the key moments in Catalan history and today houses a military museum. The hill came to prominence internationally in 1929 when it hosted the International Exhibition, which left behind the Palau Nacional (now the MNAC), and again in 1992 when it was the main venue for the Olympic Games, with the refurbished Olympic Stadium, the Palau Sant Jordi sports arena designed by Arata Isozaki, and the Olympic Ring. Today Montjuïc is also home to the Fundació Joan Miró, the Teatre Grec amphitheatre, beautiful gardens, and the magical Font Màgica.
Did you know? The 1992 Barcelona Olympics opening ceremony included the most iconic moment in Olympic history, an archer lighting the Olympic flame by shooting a flaming arrow into the stadium torch.
