About Musée Calvet

Avignon's principal fine-arts museum, born from a doctor's 1810 bequest and set in an 18th-century mansion, its eclectic rooms spanning Egyptian antiquities to modern French painting.

Musee Calvet is Avignon's principal fine-arts museum, on Rue Joseph Vernet in the historic centre. It grew from the 1810 bequest of Esprit Calvet, an Avignon physician who left his library, natural-history collection and antiquities to his native city. Napoleon I authorised the legacy by decree, and the museum was established in 1811. Since the 1980s the fine-arts collection has been shown here, while the museum's archaeology occupies the separate Musee lapidaire; both are run by the Fondation Calvet.

The museum fills the Hotel de Villeneuve-Martignan, an 18th-century Provencal mansion rebuilt from 1741 by Jean-Baptiste Franque and completed in 1749; the city acquired it in 1833 and it was listed as a historic monument in 1963. Its eclectic holdings span Egyptian and classical antiquities, European painting from the 16th to the 20th century, sculpture, decorative arts and tapestries. Artists represented include Jacques-Louis David, Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun and Horace Vernet, alongside moderns such as Soutine, Dufy and Vlaminck.

Did you know? The museum exists thanks to Esprit Calvet, an Avignon doctor whose 1810 will left the city his library, natural-history specimens and antiquities; Napoleon authorised the bequest and the museum opened in 1811.
