About Avignon

Avignon spent most of the fourteenth century as the unlikely capital of the Catholic world. For nearly seventy years the popes lived here on the Rhône rather than in Rome, and they built to match: a colossal pale fortress of a palace that still looms over everything. Add a broken bridge made famous by a nursery rhyme and a huge summer theatre festival, and you have a small city that has never quite stopped performing.

The whole old town still sits inside its medieval walls, unusually complete. At its heart the Palais des Papes rises in bare golden stone, part palace, part fortress, next to a cathedral topped by a gilded statue of the Virgin. Down at the river, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the 'Pont d'Avignon' of the song, reaches out over the Rhône and simply stops halfway: four arches and then nothing.

The popes came in 1309, when the papacy left a chaotic Rome, and seven of them ruled from here until 1377, raising what is often called the largest Gothic palace in Europe. Even after the papacy returned to Rome, Avignon stayed church territory, governed from afar, right up until the French Revolution. UNESCO put the palace, the bridge and the old episcopal quarter on its World Heritage list in 1995.

That bridge is a lesson in wishful thinking. It once stretched right across the river on around twenty-two arches, but the Rhône kept sweeping them away, and after one flood too many it was simply abandoned. The song has everyone dancing 'sur le pont', on the bridge, though people more likely danced beside it, on the island below. Every July the Avignon Festival turns the whole city into a stage.

Beyond the monuments it is a warm, easy Provençal city of cafe-lined squares, markets and narrow lanes. Climb the garden bluff of the Rocher des Doms for the river panorama, wander the old dyers' street along its little canal, and cross to the island for the classic view back. Then claim a table on the main square. Start walking.

Did you know?

Three things most visitors miss

Palais des Papes

The count of Avignon popes is usually given as seven for 1309-1377, but rises to nine if you include the two antipopes of the later Western Schism, who held a rival court here until 1403.

Pont Saint-Bénézet

The founding legend says a shepherd named Benezet, guided by a heavenly voice, proved his mission by lifting a massive stone before a doubting crowd; it is folklore, not documented history.

Place du Palais

The Hotel des Monnaies is considered Avignon's first Baroque monument. Dated 1619, its architect is unknown, and its oversized carved ornaments are only attributed to a Florentine sculptor, Simone Bartolacci.
