About Rocher des Doms
The limestone bluff and English-style garden at the top of Avignon, the city's original settlement site, with sweeping Rhone panoramas, a swan pond and shaded walks above the palace.
The Rocher des Doms is a rocky limestone outcrop and public garden at the highest point of Avignon, rising about 30 metres above the Rhone, above the Palais des Papes. Regarded as the cradle of the city, it is traditionally seen as the site of Avignon's first settlement, with human occupation traced back to the Neolithic. A bishop's castle once stood on the rock but burned in 1650 and was replaced by windmills. The present English-style landscaped garden was established in 1830 and developed through the 19th century.
Its features include shaded walks, statues and a large ornamental pond with ducks and swans. From a belvedere on its northern edge the garden offers panoramic views over the Rhone, the Pont Saint-Benezet, Villeneuve-les-Avignon and toward Mont Ventoux. A free public park adjoining the cathedral and the palace, it is reached on foot from Place du Palais and lies within the Historic Centre of Avignon inscribed by UNESCO in 1995.
Did you know? The Rocher des Doms is called the cradle of Avignon, with archaeological traces of occupation reaching back to the Neolithic, though the origin claim rests on inference rather than a fixed date.
