About Les Halles d'Avignon
Avignon's covered food market on Place Pie, some forty stalls of Provencal produce behind a striking 2005 living wall by botanist Patrick Blanc; a market has stood here since 1859.
Les Halles is Avignon's covered food market, on Place Pie in the city centre. A market has been held on the square since 1859, while the present covered hall opened in 1974, occupying the ground floor of a multi-storey building topped by a car park. Inside, around forty stalls sell local produce, fish, meat, cheese and regional foods. The market runs mornings from Tuesday to Sunday, from morning until early afternoon, and is closed on Mondays.
The building is best known for its northern facade, covered since 2005 by a mur vegetal, or living wall, created by the botanist Patrick Blanc, who popularised the modern vertical garden. Reported to be about 30 metres wide and 11.5 metres high and planted at roughly twenty plants per square metre, the wall is kept lush by a drip system that trickles nutrient-rich water down the surface. It is a free public sight that transformed a plain concrete facade.
Did you know? A food market has been held on Place Pie since 1859; the current covered hall, opened in 1974, sits beneath a multi-storey car park and gathers around forty stalls.
