About Prinsengracht
The outermost of Amsterdam's three great Golden Age canals, home to the Anne Frank House, Westerkerk, and the city's largest houseboat community.
Prinsengracht, the Prince's Canal, is the outermost and longest of Amsterdam's three main Golden Age canals, stretching some 3 kilometres from the IJ harbour to the Amstel river. While Herengracht was designated for the wealthiest private residents, Prinsengracht was always more democratic in character, its buildings included merchants' houses, warehouses, almshouses, and churches. The canal's most famous landmarks include the Westerkerk (Western Church), whose tower is the tallest church tower in Amsterdam; the Anne Frank House at number 263; and the Pulitzer Hotel, which occupies a stretch of interconnected canal houses. Prinsengracht is also the heartland of Amsterdam's famous houseboat community, hundreds of inhabited houseboats line its banks, many occupied year-round by permanent residents who have made the canal their home. The canal hosts the colourful King's Day celebrations every April 27th.
Did you know? The Prinsengracht is Amsterdam's longest canal at just over 3 kilometres, with more than 1,500 individual buildings along its banks.
