About Westerkerk

Amsterdam's tallest church, with a tower visible across the city, a carillon Anne Frank heard from hiding, and Rembrandt's unmarked pauper's grave within.

The Westerkerk (Western Church) is a Dutch Reformed church in the Jordaan neighbourhood, completed in 1631 and designed by Hendrick de Keyser. Its tower, at 85 metres, is the tallest in Amsterdam and is crowned with a replica of the Imperial Crown of Maximilian of Austria, a symbol granted to the city in 1489 in gratitude for trade privileges. The church houses a spectacular carillon of 51 bells. Rembrandt van Rijn, who lived nearby on Jodenbreestraat, is buried here in an unmarked pauper's grave, he died in poverty in 1669 and his burial place was not precisely recorded. Anne Frank famously wrote in her diary that the Westerkerk bells were a source of comfort during her years in hiding nearby. The church remains an active congregation and can be visited most days; the tower can be climbed for panoramic views over Amsterdam. Organ concerts are held regularly in summer.

Did you know? The crown on Westerkerk's tower is a replica of the Imperial Crown given to Amsterdam by Emperor Maximilian I in 1489, the only city ever granted this honour.
