About Vondelpark

Amsterdam's beloved green lung, 47 hectares of lawns, ponds, and gardens with an open-air theatre, welcoming ten million visitors a year.

Vondelpark is Amsterdam's most celebrated public park, a 47-hectare green oasis in the heart of the city, stretching from the Museum Quarter to the suburb of Amsterdam-Zuid. Created in 1865 and named after the seventeenth-century Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, the park was designed in the English landscape style by Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher, featuring gently rolling lawns, winding paths, ponds, and a rose garden. At its heart stands an open-air theatre that hosts free concerts and performances throughout summer. Statues throughout the park include the celebrated Vondel monument unveiled in 1867. On warm summer days the park transforms into Amsterdam's great communal living room, with cyclists, roller-skaters, picnickers, musicians, and sunbathers filling every corner. The park receives approximately ten million visitors a year, more visitors per hectare than almost any other urban park in Europe.
