About Museumplein
Amsterdam's great cultural square linking the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and Concertgebouw in one magnificent open space.
Museumplein is Amsterdam's most culturally concentrated public square, a large open grass expanse in the southern part of the city ringed by four of Amsterdam's greatest cultural institutions. The Rijksmuseum anchors the northern end with its magnificent neo-Gothic facade and bicycle underpass; the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum stand side by side on the western edge; and the celebrated Concertgebouw concert hall occupies the southern corner. The square was redesigned in the 1990s to create a unified open space, previously it was divided by roads, and now serves as a communal gathering place for Amsterdammers and visitors alike. In winter a large ice-skating rink is installed; in summer concerts, events, and film screenings fill the open lawn. The famous "I Amsterdam" lettered sculpture that stood here was moved to other city locations in 2018. The square is also the starting point for the city's largest public events, including New Year's celebrations.
Did you know? Museumplein was redesigned in the 1990s and contains an underground car park beneath its lawn to keep the square car-free above ground.
