About Rías Altas & Costa da Morte
The wild, dramatic Atlantic coastline north and west of A Coruña, the Rías Altas (Upper Estuaries) and the Costa da Morte (Death Coast), named for its shipwrecks, with spectacular cliffs, fishing villages, Celtic hillforts, and the westernmost point of continental Europe.
The coast north and west of A Coruña is among the wildest and most dramatic in Europe. The Rías Altas (Upper Estuaries), a series of large, deep, green-banked fjord-like inlets between Ferrol and Ribadeo, contain some of the finest landscapes in Galicia: wooded hillsides descending to clear Atlantic waters, fishing villages accessible only by winding roads, and the kind of beauty that demands slow travel. Further south and west, the coast becomes the Costa da Morte (the Death Coast), named for the hundreds of ships wrecked on its rocks over the centuries, driven there by Atlantic storms and the lack of natural shelter. The Costa da Morte ends at Cabo Fisterra (Cape Finisterre), traditionally believed to be the westernmost point of the known world in medieval times, the place where the land ended and the ocean of mystery began. Pilgrims who had walked the Camino de Santiago would continue west from Santiago another 90 kilometres to Fisterra, to stand at the edge of the world and often burn their boots there.
Did you know? The Costa da Morte contains the highest concentration of documented shipwrecks of any coastline in Europe, over 1,700 recorded incidents over the past five centuries, including the infamous 2002 sinking of the Prestige oil tanker, which caused one of the worst environmental disasters in Spanish history.
