About Aquarium Finisterrae
A Coruña's excellent marine aquarium, located next to the Tower of Hercules, it focuses on the Atlantic marine life of the Galician coast, with a large shark tank, an underwater tunnel, and exhibits on the ecosystem of the Galician rias.
The Aquarium Finisterrae is part of A Coruña's network of science museums and is one of the best aquariums in northern Spain. Located on the Atlantic seafront near the Tower of Hercules, it specialises in the marine life of Galicia's Atlantic waters, the rias (estuaries), the open ocean, and the intertidal zone, making it a genuinely educational experience as well as an entertaining one. The aquarium's centrepiece is the large shark tank, viewed through a full-length underwater tunnel that allows visitors to walk beneath circling sharks, rays, and large Atlantic fish. There are also tanks dedicated to the rocky intertidal zone, the sandy-bottom environments of the rias, and the pelagic ocean. A particularly informative section focuses on the ecology of the Galician rias and the aquaculture traditions of the coast, explaining how mussels are farmed on bateas (rafts), how barnacles are harvested, and how the rias's extraordinary productivity arises from the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich Atlantic waters. The aquarium is popular with families and children, and its café and shop face the Atlantic.
Did you know? The Galician coast produces more mussels than any other region of Europe, over 300,000 tonnes per year, because the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich Atlantic water along the Galician coast provides ideal conditions for mussel farming. The batea (raft) system, introduced in the 1940s, transformed Galician fishing communities into some of the most prosperous in Spain.
