About Domus Museum
The world's only museum dedicated entirely to the human being, an interactive science museum designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki (1995) on the Atlantic seafront, exploring the body, senses, consciousness, and what it means to be human.
The Domus, Casa del Hombre (House of Man), is a science museum that opened in 1995, designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. Its building is one of the most striking pieces of modern architecture in Galicia: a curved stone sail shape rising from the Atlantic seafront, covered in slate tiles, that makes reference to the maritime tradition of A Coruña while creating an unmistakably contemporary form. The museum is dedicated entirely to the theme of the human being, exploring the body (its biology, its senses, its neurology), the evolution of Homo sapiens, the nature of consciousness, the diversity of human cultures, and the future of the species. Its interactive exhibits range from hands-on biology demonstrations to philosophical questions about identity and existence. The museum is part of the Museos Científicos Coruñeses (MC2), A Coruña's network of science museums, which also includes the Aquarium Finisterrae and the Casa de las Ciencias planetarium. It is particularly popular with children and families, though the philosophical content and quality of the exhibitions make it worthwhile for adults.
Did you know? Arata Isozaki, who designed the Domus, was awarded the Pritzker Prize (architecture's highest honour) in 2019, 24 years after the Domus opened. He is part of a remarkable generation of Japanese architects who transformed international architecture in the late 20th century.
