About Glass Galleries (Galerías)

A Coruña's most iconic architectural image, the white-framed glass balconies encasing the facades of buildings along the bay, creating a shimmering glass wall that faces the sea and has defined the city's silhouette for over a century.

The galerías, the glass-enclosed balconies that line the facades of buildings along A Coruña's main seafront boulevard, the Avenida de la Marina, are arguably the most distinctive architectural feature in all of Galicia. Developed from the late 18th century onwards, these glass structures serve a very practical Galician purpose: they allow residents to enjoy views of the sea and the garden squares while being protected from the fierce Atlantic winds, rain, and spray that characterise the Galician coast. Essentially an enclosed balcony of glass and white-painted wood (originally timber, later metal), the galerías became the defining feature of the bourgeois apartments that were built facing the bay during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The entire western facade of the Avenida de la Marina, facing the harbour, is lined with these structures, creating an extraordinary visual effect: a continuous wall of glass that catches and reflects the changing light of the Galician sky, the movement of the sea, and the passage of the sun. The effect has been compared to a natural mirror, and the galerías of A Coruña are one of the most photographed architectural ensembles in northern Spain.

Did you know? A Coruña's galerías inspired the nickname 'City of Glass' (ciudad de cristal), it is estimated that the Avenida de la Marina contains over 10,000 individual glass panels, making it one of the most extensive glass facades of any street in the world.
