About Fraumünster
A graceful Gothic church on the west bank of the Limmat, world-famous for its five luminous stained-glass windows created by Marc Chagall in 1970.
Founded in 853 AD by Louis the German as a Benedictine convent for noble women, the Fraumünster has graced Zurich's western riverbank for over a thousand years. The slender blue spire is one of the city's most beloved silhouettes. While the building itself features a beautifully preserved Gothic choir from the 13th century, the Fraumünster's global fame rests on its extraordinary stained-glass windows. In 1970, Russian-French artist Marc Chagall created five monumental windows for the choir, a masterpiece of 20th-century art combining biblical themes with his signature dreamlike imagery in deep blues, greens, reds, and yellows. A separate rose window in the north transept was created by Augusto Giacometti in 1945. Together, these windows transform the interior into a breathtaking spectacle of colored light. The original abbey's medieval cloister, with its beautiful Romanesque arches, is also open to visitors. The Fraumünster stands directly opposite the Grossmünster across the Limmat, and the two towers together define the heart of Zurich's skyline.
Did you know? The Fraumünster's abbesses once ruled much of Zurich, they appointed the city's chief magistrates and controlled markets for centuries.
