About Vaporetto Route 1

Vaporetto Line 1 is the slow water bus that makes 22 stops along the full length of the Grand Canal, offering the most spectacular and most affordable sightseeing journey in Venice past 200 historic palaces.

The vaporetto (literally 'little steamboat') is Venice's public water bus system, operated by ACTV. Introduced in 1881, vaporetti have replaced gondolas as the primary means of everyday transport for Venetians.

Line 1, the Grand Canal route, is the most celebrated. Running from Piazzale Roma or the Santa Lucia train station at one end to the Lido at the other, with 22 stops along the Grand Canal itself, it offers a slow, stop-by-stop journey past the greatest concentration of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque palace architecture in the world. From the water, you see the palaces as they were designed to be seen, from the front, with their water entrances and mooring posts (paline) in the canal below.

The journey from one end of the Grand Canal to the other takes about 50 minutes on Line 1 (the express Line 2 takes about 25 minutes). For the price of a single ticket, Line 1 is the cheapest sightseeing tour in Venice and one of the greatest boat journeys in the world.

Did you know? A single vaporetto ticket in Venice costs about €9.50 (2024), while a gondola ride for 30 minutes costs €80-100, making the vaporetto the most affordable way to see the Grand Canal's 200 palaces, passing them at a perfect viewing pace.
