About Squero di San Trovaso

The Squero di San Trovaso is one of only two remaining traditional gondola boatyards in Venice, recognisable by its Alpine chalet-style wooden buildings, where craftsmen still build and repair gondolas using the same techniques practised for centuries.

A squero (from the Italian word for 'square', referring to the carpenter's square used in boatbuilding) is the Venetian term for a gondola boatyard. At the height of the gondola's importance, there were dozens of squeri scattered across Venice. Today only two or three survive as working establishments.

The Squero di San Trovaso, in the Dorsoduro neighbourhood on the Rio di San Trovaso, is the most picturesque of the survivors. It dates from the 17th century and is immediately distinctive for its small wooden buildings in the style of Alpine farmhouses, a surprise in the middle of a Venetian lagoon city. The Alpine style is explained by the origins of the craftsmen: the squereroi (gondola builders) traditionally came from the Cadore region in the Dolomites, and they built their workshops in the architectural style of their mountain homeland.

Visitors cannot enter the squero, but it can be easily viewed from the fondamenta (canal bank) on the other side of the narrow rio, and it is one of the most charming small glimpses into the working life of traditional Venice.

Did you know? Venice's gondola boatyards (squeri) were once among the busiest workshops in the city, with perhaps 50 active squeri when gondolas were the primary transport. Today, only two or three traditional working squeri remain in Venice.
