About Caffè Florian
Caffè Florian, opened in 1720, is one of the oldest continuously operating cafés in the world and the oldest in Italy, its frescoed and mirrored rooms welcoming everyone from Casanova to Goethe to Byron while an orchestra plays beneath the arcades of Piazza San Marco.
Caffè Florian opened under the Procuratie Nuove on the south side of Piazza San Marco on 29 December 1720, founded by Floriano Francesconi. It is one of the oldest cafés in continuous operation in the world and the oldest in Italy. The interior consists of a series of small mirrored and frescoed rooms, including the famous Chinese Room, Oriental Room, and Senate Room, all decorated in the 18th-century style that has been carefully preserved and restored over three centuries.
The café has been frequented by an extraordinary roster of historical figures: Casanova was a regular, as were Goethe, Lord Byron, Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Stravinsky, and Monet. During the Austrian occupation of Venice in the 19th century, the café took on political significance: Venetian patriots chose to patronise Florian while Austrians drank at Café Quadri across the square.
Sitting at Caffè Florian is expensive, especially if you take a table outside to hear the orchestra, but the experience includes three centuries of history and the finest café terrace in the world.
